I was mounting a fancy safety grab bar to use as a towel bar and only to grab on a real emergency - not to hold on to or pull up on - not ADA certified. One side of the grab bar aligned with a stud, no problem, I used the manufacturer's supplied wood screws. However, the other side only had sheet rock, no way to get to a stud.I ordered the toggler because they are rated at over 200 pounds in sheet rock. Sheet rock must be in good condition, if it's old and crumbly or wet it will not work, the toggler will pull through. Order the correct size based on the supplied bolts, if you order too big the bolts won't go through the mounting hole in the item you are mounting.
You need a 1/2-inch drill bit, but since you're just drilling sheet rock a 1/2-inch bit with a 3/8-inch shank will do because it just goes right through, even a hand drill will work ans long as the bit is 1/2-inch Dia.
These holes will not 'hide' behind a very small item because of the hole size. Mark locations carefully, once in and locked they cannot be moved around, little, if any, "play."
Drill hole, slip front into hole (see picture on box), align and pull back on long ends, hold both ends with one hand and slide small plastic lock INTO hole (you'll hear it click as you push it along) with the other. Pull ends, push lock INTO hole - it's easier than it sounds, but it's important - only then spread and break off long ends - see picture on box.
I then used a supplied bolt to make sure the toggle was tight and working correctly before doing the next one. If not I ASSUME you could just carefully cut off and remove the plastic stop wall stop and then push the rest into the hole and it would fall behind the wall, then use another one in the same hole or patch.
I used three of them on the sheet rock side of the grab bar and the supplied bolts and my own flat washer, an end cover on the bar covered all the hardware. Handy item for mounting to hollow spaces - very long if you need depth to get by something, nice feature. I would not bet my life on anything mounted to sheet rock, but short of that, this will handle almost all jobs up to the loads stated on the box.
Good product - does what it's supposed to do - easy to install, but mark and drill carefully.
