Product Description

Turcite X is a fluoropolymer based material with proprietary additives for enhanced performance. It excels in low load and high speed applications, and can be easily machined. It has minimal hygroscopic characteristics and possesses low thermal expansion properties, resulting in a structurally stable material. Its maximum continuous service temperature is also 180 F (80 C). Turcite X has lower friction properties than Turcite A. Typical applications include bearings, bushings and slides. It is lubricious, similar to PTFE but has more back bone.

When the starter button on my 20-year-old BMW motorcycle snapped off -- apparently a common ailment -- I was dismayed to learn that the only option was to replace the entire combination switch assembly for $170. Instead, I measured the original button pieces and machined a new part in one evening. (Don't be too impressed when I say "machining" -- I don't have a lathe, but I'm a cuttin' fool with a drill press and a couple of wood chisels!)

There are cheaper plastics, but I selected ECTFE because it isn't degraded by sunlight, weather or vehicle fluids. In addition, I got three bonuses: Firstly, this is actually self-lubricating Turcite, which reduces sliding friction at the button shaft; secondly, the color is similar enough to the original button (green) that no painting was needed; and lastly, this material is wonderfully easy to cut and finish!

The replacement button looks good and works well. I'll be on the lookout for other uses for this excellent material.
