36" Brown Screenaway Door Review

I bought this door and decided to install it myself after watching their video. They have an 'easy installation' system.

I have no complaints about the door itself, although I just put it in so it's too early to tell if it will last.

But installing it is not easy. The instructions were very clear, but my complaint is with the hardware.

It comes with two rails, one for the side with the hinges and one for the side with the latch.

Both rails struck me as a little flimsy, considering the hinge rail will hold such a heavy door. But the real problem is that both rails are not 100% square.

Which means that when you screw it to your square frame of your house, one side of it pulls away from the frame. When I screwed in the hinge rail side, try as I might to get the rail to sit firmly against the frame, it kept pulling away. Took me a while to figure out it's because the rail isn't square. It was easier to get the top of the door in the right place, probably because they have you put that screw in with just the hinge rail before it is attached to the door. But as I went down the rail screwing it in, it got further and further off. The result was that the door did not hang straight. It had about 1/8 of an inch gap at the bottom.

Same on the latch rail side. Since I couldn't get the inside part of the latch rail to sit snugly against the frame, it means that the part of the rail that actually latches the door is too far towards the outside. Which means that in order to have the door fit snugly, I had to install the latch plate further in than the corresponding cut out in the latch rail, which leaves a little gap and looks stupid. And because the door wasn't hanging straight due to the other rail problem, I have about 1/4 gap at the top of the door.

Another complaint: the box says that it needs at least 1 inch of a mounting surface. I measured and I did have 1 inch on my frame. But the width of the latch rail is actually 1.5 inches. This means that about 1/4 of the opening where the latch goes is over empty air. Which I guess isn't a problem, except that's another reason why the latch plate doesn't line up totally with the latch opening on the rail.

The template they give you for drilling the holes for the handle is pretty close. But I did it very carefully according to instructions and one of the holes didn't line up exactly right with the hardware. Had to buy a file to try to fix it.

Also, I can't attest to this because I haven't had it long enough, but another review I read (for the 32 inch width) said that the closer is pneumatic instead of hydraulic, which means that it won't work if the temp is below 60 degrees. He said the only time the door didn't slam was in the summer. He finally got fed up and bought another closer for it.

Attaching the closer isn't easy either because you have to drill holes 1 inch from the top of the door which is too close to get any kind of power drill in there.

So between buying two spade bits for installation, a chisel for the dead bolt, a file to fix the drilled hole that didn't align, a drill bit (mine broke off), a screw extractor kit because I couldn't get my old door off without stripping the screws, and still having a door the doesn't hang right, I wish I had spent the $100 to have someone install it. They could worry about shimming the rails to account for them not being square. So much for the easy installation.

**after having the door in place for about a week now, I've found something else I don't like about it. On the outside, there's about 1/4 inch gap between the glass and the white metal trim piece in the middle of the door. I've found that dragonflies keep getting stuck in it. They fly against the glass and then fly downward and get stuck.

Incidentally, today when I was at a client's house I noticed they have a very similar door. It has the same hidden screen as this one. But it's made by Andersen. It does not have this big gap. They said they bought it at Home Depot and had them install it. Wish I had shopped around more instead of buying the first cool-looking door I saw (I got mine at Lowes).
