Puma Captain Folding Knife. Zytel Handle. Lockback Lock. Puma Emblem on Handle.PUMA Knives Puma Captain Zytel Review
Pocket knives are a hobby of mine. I have quite a few, each selected for their ability to take and hold a fine edge and for their attractiveness. Some are expensive and some are not. This 3.25" Puma, sometimes referred to as the Captain, has very lightweight Zytel bolsters, and is the one I've settled on as my daily carry knife, even though it's one of my least expensive knives. It's a fairly large knife, but I hardly notice it in my pocket.
The steel is very hard and takes time and effort to put a razor sharp edge on it, but it keeps that edge longer than most of my other knives. Not that you'll be needing to sharpen it out of the box - it comes with a very nice factory edge. I don't know where the blades are figured and sharpened, but they do a fine job. The spine of the clip and the hollow ground edge are perfectly symmetrical. The factory edge bevel is about 30 degrees, but the steel is strong and hard enough to support a very fine 10-15 degree bevel. I keep mine at 10 degrees and love the way it literally flows through whatever I'm cutting with seemingly zero pressure.
The knife opens very smoothly and easily, unlike many knives, and locks solidly in place with no wobble whatsoever. The release is just as smooth and requires very little effort to close. This feature alone makes this knife a joy to use.
The two brass pins that hold the knife together protrude slightly from each side of the grip. Initially, I was a little annoyed by this detail, as I thought they should have ground them down to be flush, but I've made my peace with them as they don't really get in the way, even though I notice them when I fondle the knife in my pocket.
Puma steel is made in Solingen Germany, but I believe these cheaper models are then shipped to China for assembly, which probably accounts for their low price.
I also own this knive's bigger brother, the Puma General (3 1/3"), which has heavy zinc plated metal bolsters and is made entirely in Germany. It cost 5x what this knife costs, and weighs 3-4x more, and is also a very fine knife, but at the end of the day, the Zytel Captain is the one I carry.
Buy this knife, even if you already have some other knives. You won't regret it.
